Epic contends robots are cool

Should digital game storefronts disclose if generative AI was used in the creation of the game? The Head of Epic says no.

In a series of posts on Twitter, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney compared Steam’s required disclosure for generative AI to “mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses.” From Sweeney’s Twitter post:

The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.

Steam currently requires game developers to specify if generative AI was used in the creation of the product, and if so, how it was used. Meanwhile, Sweeney contends that as use of AI continues to grow in game development, all creators will use the tool in some form to make their games.

What do you think? Should digital storefronts disclose if and how generative AI was used in the creation of a game? Take our poll and we will post results in an upcoming issue.
